WASHINGTON, December 8 (Sputnik) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi won the TIME magazine’s readers’ poll for Person of the Year, TIME reported Monday.
Modi garnered 16 percent of five million votes cast on-line at TIME.com, followed by the Ferguson protesters with nine percent. Others in the top five included Hong Kong protest leader Joshua Wang, Nobel Peace-prize winner Mala Yousafi and doctors fighting Ebola in Africa. Russian President Vladimir Putin finished just outside the top five with 4.3 percent of the votes.
However, Modi was conspicuously absent from the TIME editors’ short-list of eight finalists, which was also announced on Monday. The editor’s list includes Russian President Vladimir Putin, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Alibaba founder Jack Ma, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Iraqi Kurdish President Massoud Barzani, singer Taylor Swift, the Ebola caregivers and Ferguson protesters.
Egypt’s General Abdul Fattah al-Sisi was chosen by TIME’s readers as a person of the year in 2013.
The official editors’ choice for TIME’s Person of the Year will be announced on Wednesday, December 10.
