UNITED NATIONS, December 10 (Sputnik) — UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the announcement of elections in Lesotho, scheduled for February 28, 2015.
Ban “welcomes the progress, achieved so far in the efforts to uphold democratic principles and secure the restoration of political stability and security in the Kingdom. He encourages all Basotho [ethnic group] leaders to comply with the Maseru Facilitation Declaration and work together in a spirit of compromise to ensure an environment conducive to peaceful and credible elections,” a statement published on the organization's official website Tuesday said.
Ban also praised the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for its role in "facilitating an agreed way forward and a return to political normalcy."
On August 31, Prime Minister Thomas Thabane fled the country to South Africa accusing the army of staging a coup. Thabane said he would return to his country as soon as he knew he "was not going to get killed."
