MOSCOW, December 11 (Sputnik) — The European Commission announced on Thursday that it has updated the EU air safety list, banning all Libya-based airlines from operating in European airspace.

"Recent events in Libya have led to a situation whereby the Civil Aviation Authority is no longer able to fulfil its international obligations with regard to the safety of the Libyan aviation sector," Violeta Bulc, EU Commissioner for Transport, was cited as saying on the Commission's official website.

In mid-2014, Libya was hit by the worst wave of unrest following the 2011 overthrow of long-term leader Muammar Gaddafi. The country is currently facing clashes between numerous militias that control parts of its territory.

Bulc vowed to help the Libyan aviation sector "as soon as the situation on the ground will allow for it", noting, however, that passenger safety is non-negotiable and remains the top priority.

The EU air safety list currently bans a total of 310 airlines from operating in the union's airspace. This includes all carriers certified in 21 countries, in addition to several individual airlines.

According to the European Commission, airlines subject to the ban are either not able to respect international safety standards or based in states where civil aviation authorities are unable to exercise the necessary safety control.
