The editor-in-chief of a leading English-language newspaper in Indonesia is involved in a blasphemy case after publishing a cartoon about the Islamic State.

MOSCOW, December 12 (Sputnik) — The editor-in-chief of the largest Indonesian English-language newspaper is a suspect in a blasphemy case, reports AFP.

The newspaper published a cartoon on July 3, showing a man raising an Islamic State flag with religious text over a picture of skull and crossbones, with armed fighters in the background, reports Dawn Newspaper.

Following protests from Islamic groups, the Jakarta Post issued a front-page apology and withdrew the cartoon five days later, claiming that it was trying to “critique the use of religious symbols” and “reproach” the Islamic State.

The editor-in-chief Meidyatama Suryodiningrat could be jailed for up to five years if found guilty.

Responding to police, Suryodiningrat, denied committing any crime in relation to the cartoon published on July 3.

"We have received information on the matter and currently we are still studying it," Suryodiningrat said in a statement posted on the newspaper's website late Thursday, reports Reuters.

"What we produced was a journalistic piece that criticized the ISIS, which has carried out violence in the name of religion."

Indonesian media stated that, Suryodiningrat, would be called in for questioning next week. In some criminal cases in Indonesia, people are first named suspects and only detained at a later date.

According to Amnesty International, since 2004, around 106 people have been convicted in Indonesia under blasphemy laws, some of whom have been imprisoned for up to five years, as reported by Reuters.
