MOSCOW, December 12 (Sputnik) - A Swiss citizen, who managed to get away from Islamic militants in the Philippines, said that he decided to escape because he could not imagine spending one more Christmas in detention, AFP reported on Friday.
“I knew I had to get out," said Vinciguerra. “I missed [my family] so much.”

Members of a Philippine-based Islamist group kidnapped Vinciguerra in February 2012. He managed to escape while his Abu Sayyaf abductors were attacked by governmental forces in the jungle. Vinciguerra stabbed his guard and ran away, but was injured by another militant, who opened fire on him, according to Fox News.
After his recovery in a Filipino military hospital, Vinciguerra returned to Switzerland. He said he was happy to see his family and spend Christmas home, but expressed concerns about his Dutch companion, Ewold Horn, who is still held hostage and suffers from health problems.
