MOSCOW, December 16 (Sputnik) — Russia and Denmark will discuss conflicting territorial claims on the Arctic continental shelf via bilateral talks, according to a statement by Russia’s Foreign Ministry Press and Information.
"The possible adjacent areas of continental shelf in high-latitude Arctic region will be delimited via bilateral talks, in accordance with the international law," a commentary posted on the ministry’s official website says.
The ministry also pointed out that first the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf must confirm that the ocean floor territories Russia and Denmark lay their claim to are indeed a part of continental shelf.
"Therefore, this issue will not be resolved today or tomorrow. Considering how the Commission is currently reviewing the claim submitted by Denmark, the process will most likely be initiated no sooner than 10-15 years from now," the ministry notes.
