"The Lima agreement represents a step in the right direction in committing all nations to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. That said, the time for modest pledges has long since passed, and this text falls short not only of expectations, but of what is truly needed. I urge world leaders to recognize the collective gravity of this moment – and their moral responsibility to make far more ambitious commitments to tackling climate change in Paris next year," Roza Aknazarova was quoted as saying in a press release on the assembly's website.
Aknazarova also pointed out that climate change is connected with security, and called for a universal agreement to be drawn up for the next conference in Peru before a final accord is reached in Paris next year.
The UN Climate Change Conference was originally scheduled to take place in Lima, Peru from December 1 to 12. However, disagreement over a binding universal draft agreement on climate change delayed the close of the conference for two days.
What was agreed upon is nations' determination to alleviate climate change by curbing carbon emissions. However, no specific steps have been agreed. Nations have to submit their pledges by summer 2015. A final agreement on climate change is expected to be adopted at the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference in France.
