MOSCOW, December 18 (Sputnik) – Dmitry Shpak, a traffic officer from Nizhnevartovsk, Russia, prevented a head-on collision, involving a bus carrying schoolchildren and a truck, by blocking a road with his patrol car, Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a press release.
Shpak escorted two buses with 93 schoolchildren, aged from 9 to 16, on their way home from the city of Izluchinsk after a holiday concert, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.
As the buses drove on the highway, two trucks carrying gravel, were coming from the opposite direction. The first truck saw signaling lights and slowed down. The second one missed the signals smashing into the first truck. The vehicle veered into the oncoming traffic lane.
Dmitry Shpak blocked the road with his car. He sustained serious injuries, including an open craniocerebral wound and a fractured rib. Shpak was taken to hospital.
Currently, Shpak is conscious and is able to speak.
Children were not injured in the incident, Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said.
