“So far, Ukraine is the only route for Russian gas deliveries to Serbia,” the Serbian foreign minister said after talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, adding that due to “the events and problems of the past… Serbian cannot and does not dare remain on this path to gas deliveries.
In order to ensure Serbia’s energy security, the country must have several energy supply routes, Dacic said, stressing that the recently scrapped South Stream project “was very important for Serbia in this regard.”
"The suspension of the South Stream project disappoints us. We all have made many political and economic efforts into the implementation of the project," Dacic announced.
On December 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the termination of the project over the European Union’s “nonconstructive stance” on the issue. The EU claimed that the South Stream pipeline was in breach with its Third Energy Package, which forbids the same companies from producing natural gas and owning the pipelines through which it flows.
The decision was met with regret by Serbia, which had invested heavily in the South Stream project.
