MOSCOW, December 23 (Sputnik) – Kiev’s decision to cancel Ukraine’s non-aligned status makes Ukraine Russia’s potential military adversary, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev stated on his Facebook page.
“Ukrainian president has submitted a bill to Verkhovna Rada cancelling Ukraine’s non-aligned status. Essentially, this is a bid to join NATO, which makes Ukraine Russia’s potential military adversary,” Medvedev posted on Facebook Monday.
Last Thursday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko submitted a draft law to the country’s parliament introducing changes to the Ukraine’s non-alignment policies. Poroshenko said in a statement that non-alignment had proved inefficient in country’s defense from foreign aggression.
In August, Ukraine voiced its intent to drop country’s non-aligned status and resume its course to join NATO.
Non-alignment of Ukraine was anchored in 2010 law, signed by then-president Viktor Yanukovych. The law stipulates that Ukraine does not seek membership in military-political alliances.
