CNN has quoted Thursday Maj. Gen. Watheq Hamdani, Iraqi police officer, who has been in charge of the operation to retake Mosul from IS, as saying that Hassan Saeed Jabouri, known as Abu Talu, was killed roughly 18 miles to the south of the city.
According to the news channel, Jabouri is the second Mosul governor appointed by IS, who was killed by a US-led coalition. The previous one, Radwan Taleb Hamdouni was killed about a month ago.
IS is a radical Sunni group also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the group extended its attacks to northern parts of Iraq. Known for their brutal tactics, Islamic State jihadists have seized vast areas in Iraq and neighboring Syria, declaring an Islamic caliphate in the territories under their control.
An international coalition, led by the United States, is currently carrying out airstrikes against the militants' targets in both countries.
