The Indonesian province of Aceh was worst hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Some 131,000 people were killed there. The wave devastated almost everything in the area up to two kilometers inland along the coastline.
In 2004, no one could predict how much time it would take to reconstruct Banda-Aceh. At first it was presumed the rebuilding would take six months, and then it became clear that the work would extend over several years.
The tsunami hit the Phi Phi Islands at 10:00 a.m. December 26 and caused serious damages to the main tourist island Ko Phi Phi Don, where more than 1,500 people were killed. Many hotels and homes were destroyed there.
The tsunami swept many Thai-owned and other small business, and the Thai government provided large amount of money to enable the recovery of the private sector.
Some days after the disaster, a former resident of Phi Phi Don Emiel Kok created a fund for the island restoration. A noncommercial organization was established. It comprised of island residents and volunteers from all over the world. They wanted to bring tropic paradise back to the island, and they did it. The island was soon restored.
