MOSCOW, December 28 (Sputnik) — Some 150 people were evacuated after an Italian ferry Norman Atlantic with 466 people on board caught fire off the Greek coast, Hellenic Coast Guard told RIA Novosti Sunday.
According to the Coast Guard's spokesperson, about 150 people were evacuated and more than 300 remain on the ferry.
An international rescue operation is being conducted off the Greek coast. Several vessels and aircraft are involved in the operation.
The ferry caught fire at about 6 a.m. local time (4:00 GMT) on Sunday, when the vessel was 33 nautical miles away from the Greek island Othonoi, according to the Greek rescue officials.
According to preliminary data, the fire broke out in the cargo section.
