According to the report, Greek police sources told state television that "a preliminary investigation revealed a crater beneath the car, suggesting that explosives were involved. The police suspect that the explosion is not part of any terrorist activities."
News portal Kathimerini relates that initial accounts suggest the car was being driven along the Attiki Odos highway towards Athens International Airport when the explosion occurred, and that a police bomb disposal team at the scene found traces of explosives.
Witnesses told Tovima that the vehicle's occupants were a 35-year-old Albanian man and a 26-year-old woman, and speculated that the engine of the Smart car they were travelling in overheated as they sped their way to the airport. The female passenger remains in Athens State General Hospital receiving treatment for her injuries.
