UNITED NATIONS, December 29 (Sputnik) — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed Seoul’s proposal to engage in high-level inter-Korean unification talks with Pyongyang, the United Nations said in a statement Monday.
“The Secretary-General reiterates his belief that renewed engagement and dialogue is the only way forward for building trust and promoting inter-Korean relations,” the statement published on the organization’s website said.
According to the statement, Ban “sincerely hoped” that North Korean authorities would positively consider the proposal.
On Monday, South Korea proposed talks with the North to discuss unification of the two countries, following the setting up of a government committee in Seoul earlier this year to track the process. Pyongyang is yet to respond to the proposal.
The last high-level inter-Korean talks took place in February but were followed by a stalement after North Korea accused Seoul of sending anti-Pyongyang messages across the border. The talks are also intend to reunify families separated during the 1950 Korean war.
