Kaitlyn Jacobs was waiting for the New Year’s fireworks at Busch Gardens in Tampa when, as she told police, she felt a sudden and inexplicable pain in her leg shortly before midnight. She was transported to a local hospital where an X-ray revealed a bullet in her lower left leg.
The injuries were not life-threatening and Jacobs was released shortly after.
Florida has “conceal and carry” gun laws in which any legal resident of the state over the age of 21 can carry a pistol concealed in their clothing provided they have a permit to do so. Additionally, anyone can keep a gun in their car without a permit.
Florida law also permits private firearms sales between residents without processing through a licensed dealer meaning just about anyone can legally buy a gun in Florida without a background check or waiting period.
