MOSCOW, January 2 (Sputnik) — Rescue workers recovered twelve more bodies in the crash area of AirAsia flight QZ8501 in the Java Sea Friday, bringing the death toll to 22, DPA news agency reported.
As the search for the victims and flight recorders has been intensified due to the improved weather conditions, Bambang Sulistyo, head of Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency was quoted as saying by the media outlet that he hopes to "get more significant results today."
It was earlier reported that 16 bodies had been found by rescuers. On Friday, a group of Russian rescuers arrived in Indonesia for assistance in the search of the AirAsia flight, equipped with special gears.
AirAsia Flight QZ8501 from Surabaya, Indonesia, was heading to Singapore on Sunday when it vanished off radars about 40 minutes after the takeoff. On Tuesday, its debris and bodies of people who had been aboard were spotted scattered around in the Karimata Strait off the coast of Borneo.
