MOSCOW, January 3 (Sputnik) — Three men suspected of raping a young Japanese scientist were arrested in India, according to Japan Times.
The 22-year old woman was held in captivity for about three weeks in a village near the town of Bodh Gaya, the Indian police said. The victim managed to run away from her rapists on December 26 and came to the city of Kolkata to report her case to police. Police officers launched a criminal investigation into her case, which led to the arrest of three Indian men and with two other suspects still being looked for, as reported by the newspaper.
Sexual harassment has been a common practice in India for a long time, with New Delhi being frequently called the “rape capital” of the country, according to the Washington Post. Widely spread sexual violence has forced the Indian government to adopt new legislation, increasing prison terms for rapists up to 20 years and criminalizing human trafficking.
