MOSCOW, January 5 (Sputnik) — A man who was shot by police in San Francisco on Sunday has died in hospital, the local media reported Monday.
A 32-year old man with a replica gun was shot while trespassing in the parking area of a San Francisco police station after behaving erratically and refusing to leave. The suspect was shot multiple times and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Bay City News stated on Monday, citing the police, that the man died.
The incident took place at around 5:30 p.m. local time on Sunday (1:30 a.m. GMT, Monday). According to officer Albie Esparza quoted by Bay City News, "the sergeants saw the butt of the weapon as he pulls it out and brandishes it at the sergeants."
"We don't know his motive or why he challenged the officers or approached them in the first place… It was very erratic behavior by the suspect, very unusual," Esparza added.
After the suspect was secured it was revealed that the gun was a compressed air pistol, and not a regular handgun.
