WASHINGTON, January 7 (Sputnik) – US President Barack Obama hopes to speak with French President Francois Hollande later on Wednesday amid the terrorist attack at the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris.
Obama also offered condolences to the citizens of France over the deadly attack in Paris.
US President Obama underlined that it was important that the United States and France stand together in solidarity against the "cowardly evil attacks" on the magazine and said that the United States would give "every bit of assistance" to its ally in wake of the attack.
On Wednesday, three masked men opened fire in office of the satirical weekly magazine in Paris, Charlie Hebdo killing 12 people, 10 of them journalists and two police officers. The magazine's editor Stephane Charbonnier is among those killed in the attack.
Charlie Hebdo has previously been involved in other controversies, in particular it received threats from radical Islamic fundamentalists. The magazine's previous office was fire-bombed in 2011 after publishing controversial cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad.
