WASHINGTON, January 8 (Sputnik) — US President Barack Obama’s decision to normalize relations with Cuba is harmful to the United States and should be omitted, Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa said in a statement.

“This misguided policy of the President [Obama] will have serious implications for the United States and sends a signal to our enemies that we will cave, and we will surrender at every turn,” Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said Wednesday. “We in the Congress must do everything we can to prevent these disastrous policies to go into effect.”

According to the representative’s statement, Cuban government will get major concessions from the US president to support country’s economy, and this will threaten the US national security.

“With these new concessions by the Administration, the Castro brothers will use some of their new economic stream to invest more funds into their espionage activities – activities that are aimed against our nation,” Ros-Lehtinen said.

In December 2014 US President Barack Obama announced the decision to take major steps to normalize diplomatic relations with Cuba.

Results of a poll conducted by CBS News in December 2014, show that 70 percent of Democrats approve of re-establishing diplomatic and trade relations with Cuba, but only 39 percent of Republicans share the same opinion. Since Republicans are now in control of both chambers of the Congress, their dominance could void Obama's attempts.

December CNN poll showed that 53 percent of Americans believed Cuba was not a threat to the United States.
