WASHINGTON, January 8 (Sputnik) — An international crowd gathered at the Newseum interactive museum of news and journalism in Washington, DC on Wednesday night at a vigil for those killed in the attack on the Charlie Hebdo magazine office in Paris.
The vigil attracted many journalists from several international news organizations who rallied in solidarity of free speech and free expression. Among the newspaper cover pages from around the world that are on display in front of the Newseum was one placard that simply showed the hashtag "#JeSuisCharlie," — the "I am Charlie," battle cry.
Some of the Newseum supporters present went to Twitter to highlight the event, including one that said: "The #JeSuisCharlie vigil at the @Newseum has wrapped up. It was a big show of French and American Solidarity."
Meanwhile, several bouquets of flowers were seen in front of the French Embassy in Washington, nearly all bearing cards with the slogan "Je Suis Charlie."
On Wednesday, gunmen killed 12 people at the Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris, including 10 journalists and 2 police officers.
