NEW YORK, January 9 (Sputnik) – New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo warned residents that severe winter storms would worsen on Friday and urged motorists to drive carefully amid fears of accidents.
"While the State is reopening several roads and highways in areas no longer being hit hard by the snow, I urge motorists to use extreme caution and travel only if necessary," Cuomo said in a statement on Friday.
He also warned drivers they should plan their routes in advance due to snowfall and bitterly-cold weather.
"With more snow expected later this afternoon and this evening, drivers should be prepared for roads in affected areas to be closed later in the day and plan accordingly," the statement read.
The US National Weather Service has said that temperatures across much of the northern and eastern US have fallen to "dangerously cold" levels, with a wind-chill factor sending the mercury well below zero in some areas.
