MOSCOW, January 13 (Sputnik) — It is too early to speak about Russia's participation in the recently announced United States security summit, as Moscow has not received a formal invitation, the head of the Foreign Ministry's Department for New Challenges and Threats, Ilya Rogachev, told RIA Novosti Tuesday.
“Let’s wait for some time, because as far as I know the initiative was made public only yesterday,” Rogachev said.
Rogachev has nevertheless approved the idea of hosting the summit and said that Russia is ready to take part in international efforts to counter terrorism.
“Of course, this is a very important topic, the right one, and experts understand that this question should be discussed this way: not just the military neutralization of terrorism, but it is important to look at the problem widely, from the side of prohibiting expansion of the views and ideology that may lead to violent acts, including terrorist attacks. This is why we are ready to participate in the international counter-extremism efforts,” Rogachev explained.
On Sunday, US Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the United States will invite allies to take part in a security summit in Washington DC on February 18, in an attempt to begin a global conversation on methods to curb extremist violence.
