NEW DELHI, January 14 (Sputnik) — The record of Indian National Congress party and its positive reputation would help the party to gain votes at the upcoming Delhi Legislative Assembly Elections, the chairman of the party's campaign committee told Sputnik Tuesday.
Indian National Congress party, commonly known as the Congress, is considered to be an outsider in the election race, with Aam Aadmi Party (AAM, Common Man's Party) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, Indian People's Party) being the main rivals.
On Tuesday, the Congress appointed Ajay Maken, a former Union Minister who is popular among Delhi residents, as the chairman of the party's campaign committee for Delhi Assembly polls in order to improve the party's position.
Maken also noted that there has been "an 11-percent increase in our [the Congress] vote percentage, whereas AAP has lost 15 percent its vote share while BJP has lost five percent share of its votes" at the Delhi Cantonment Board elections that took place on Sunday.
Voting to elect 70 members of the Legislative Assembly of Delhi, one of the seven union territories of the country, will take place on February 7. BJP and AAP were the two major parties at the Delhi Assembly elections in 2013, with BJP having won 31 out of 70 seats. Moreover, the Indian general elections 2014 brought a sweeping victory for the BJP party, when the National Democratic Alliance, led by the BJP, secured the majority in parliament, and the party leader Narendra Modi became the prime minister.
The Congress is one of the world's oldest parties and one of the major political forces in India. Its ideology may be described as social liberalism.
