"The Department of State has designated Abdallah al-Ashqar as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224, which targets terrorists and those providing support to terrorists or acts of terrorism," the statement read.
Abdallah Ashqar, a Palestinian national, is reported to be a leader of and foreign relations official for the Mujahideen Shura Council in the Environs of Jerusalem, which is designated as a foreign terrorist organization, according to the statement.
The terrorist group has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on Israel, including the rocket attack on the southern Israeli city of Eilat in August 2013.
"The consequences of this designation include the freezing of all property and interests of Abdallah al-Ashqar that are in the United States, or come within the United States or the possession or control of US persons," the statement said, explaining that US citizens are now prohibited from engaging in any transactions with Ashqar.
The Mujahideen Shura Council in the Environs of Jerusalem is an umbrella group composed of several terrorist sub-groups based in Gaza. It was listed as a specially designated terrorist group by the US government in August 2014.
