"The European Commission is today announcing eight research projects into Ebola that will be funded with a total of €215 million [$250 million]. These projects will develop in particular vaccines and rapid diagnostics tests, which are key to overcoming the current Ebola crisis," the press release posted on the Commission's website reads.
The projects will be funded by both the European Commission and the European pharmaceutical industry.
The announcement was made ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, scheduled for January 21 to 24, where the Ebola outbreak will be discussed.
The eight projects will be carried out under the new Ebola+ program launched by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), Europe's largest public-private health care initiative. The program aims to speed up research against the Ebola virus.
