MOSCOW, January 21 (Sputnik) — Russia is planning to send a representative to the memorial event to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists on Wednesday.
Russia’s president has received no formal invitation to the memorial event, but Russia will be definitely represented there, the Russian Foreign Minister said.
“We will be definitely represented. We will never forget the tragic and at the same time heroic pages of the Second World War," Lavrov said.
The International Holocaust Remembrance Day takes place annually on January, 27. On this day, in 1945, Auschwitz concentration camp (the current territory of Poland) was liberated by Soviet troops.

Auschwitz-Birkenau was a complex of German Nazi concentration camps, which had been operating from 1940 to 1945 in Polish areas annexed by Nazi Germany. Over the years, about one and a half million people were killed in the camp.
Auschwitz was the largest and one of the most notorious concentration camps and is a symbol of the Holocaust. When on January 27, 1945, Soviet troops entered Auschwitz, about 7.6 thousand people were held imprisoned in the facility.
