A grand jury indicted a member of the state’s House of Delegates, on Wednesday on four counts of lying under oath and submitting forged documents in connection to a sex scandal case for which he is serving prison time.
He was re-elected to his position last week, despite being behind bars for engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old who worked as a receptionist in his office. He is serving a six month sentence for a misdemeanor conviction of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The receptionist, now 18 and pregnant, denies having sex with Morrissey.
The new charges contend that Morrissey submitted a forged child support order to the Henrico County Circuit Courts.
“The order … is by all evidence a forgery,” prosecutor William Neely said in a statement.
The former Democrat resigned immediately after his sentencing. Despite the conviction and allegations against him, he successfully ran for reelection as an independant in a special election.
Morrissey was granted privileges in a work-release program that allowed him to serve in the House and continue work at his law firm. He must report back to the jail at the close of business each day. His arraignment for the new charges is scheduled for February 9.
The receptionist’s mother was also charged for perjury.
