On January 12, 2015, the Armenian town of Gyumri became the site of a terrible tragedy when all seven members of the Avetisyan family were brutally gunned down. Valery Permyakov, a serviceman from 102nd Russian Military Base located in the city, was captured by Russian border guards and and has confessed to the crime.

Seryozha Avetisyan, a six-year old infant and the only immediate survivor of the massacre, died on January 19 in a local hospital where he was delivered in a critical condition.

A memorial service for the Avetisyan family was also held in front of the Armenian embassy in Moscow.
