The president added that the ability of the US to influence change in North Korea was “somewhat limited,” explaining that Pyongyang had a large army as well as nuclear technologies and missiles.
The United States has had strained relations with North Korea, especially over Pyongyang’s nuclear testing and missile development.
On January 2, the US president signed an executive order expanding the existing sanctions against agencies and individuals of North Korea following a cyberattack on Sony Pictures Entertainment. The president said the new sanctions were the first aspect of a US “proportionate response” following unproven accusations that the attack originated in North Korea.
