US Plans to Work With New Greek Government, Support Economic Recovery
18:59 GMT 26.01.2015 (Updated: 12:07 GMT 09.02.2023) The United States says it will continue to work with the new government of Greece, supporting domestic reforms and international efforts to foster the country's economic recovery.
WASHINGTON, January 26 (Sputnik) — The United States plans to work closely with the newly elected government of Greece and support the country in coming out of its financial crisis, US Department of State spokesperson Jen Psaki said during a press conference on Monday.
“[We] congratulate Syriza and the new prime minister Alexis Tsipras on their victory and continue to look forward to working with the new government of Greece,“ Psaki said. “As the new government begins its new work, the United States will continue to support domestic reforms and international efforts to foster Greece’s economic recovery.”
Psaki also said that the United States remained committed to help Greece “emerge from its prolonged economic crisis stronger and more stable.”
On Monday, the leader of the radical left-wing Syriza party Alexis Tsipras was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Greece after his party won the parliamentary elections a day earlier.
Since 2010, Greece has struggled exiting from a financial crisis and as a result, been dependent on billions of euros in rescue loans from the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund in exchange for strict austerity measures.
