A total of 188 people received preliminary death sentences in December for their alleged roles in the lynching of a group of policemen that took place in August 2013 in the town of Kerdassa, located on the western outskirts of Cairo, AAP points out.
However, one of the accused was sentenced to 10 years in prison due to his young age, two defendants were declared not guilty, and the charges against another two were dismissed due to their deaths.
The lynching occurred after locals stormed the police station in Kerdassa, apparently enraged by police brutality during dispersal of Islamist protests that occurred earlier.
The tragic events took place about six weeks after the then-President Mohammed Morsi was overthrown during a coup led by Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
