WASHINGTON, February 2nd (Sputnik) – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Jeffrey Callison told the Associated Press that the weekend visiting for inmates passed without Manson and Afton Elaine Burton getting married.
The 90-day marriage license that the couple obtained late last year expires on Thursday, meaning last weekend was the couple's final opportunity to say “I do” inside a visiting room at California State Prison, Corcoran. The couple now must register for a new marriage license if the wedding is to happen.
Burton, who goes by the name "Star," says she loves Manson and believes he is innocent. She traveled halfway across the country and has spent the last nine years living near the Central California prison.
Manson was convicted of killing seven people, including actress Sharon Tate, in 1971.
James McGrath, a New York City photo agency editor, said that he maintains contact with Burton and that she intends to obtain another 90-day license and go ahead with the marriage, the AP reported.
Manson became notorious in 1969 as the leader of a "family" of young killers. One of his followers and co-defendants died behind bars, while others remain imprisoned. Manson is eligible for parole next in 2027.
