WARSAW, February 3 (Sputnik) – Minister-Counsellor of the Russian embassy in Warsaw Yury Pilipson received a note of protest due to remarks by Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin criticizing Poland's foreign minister for distorting the history of World War II, Polish Foreign Ministry’s press service told RIA Novosti Tuesday.

Last week, a Polish politician claimed that the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was liberated by Ukrainians since the operation was carried out by the Red Army's First Ukrainian Front. On Monday, Karasin labeled Schetyna's remarks as “clumsy attempts” to distort the history of World War II, bringing shame on all members of the Polish diplomatic service.

"The Russian Minister-Counsellor… has received a note of protest. The case in point is the yesterday’s remarks by Mr. Karasin in relation to Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna,” press spokesman Marcin Wojciechowski said.

The minister's comments caused outrage in Russia and in a number of European countries. Several Russian officials pointed out that the Red Army's Ukrainian Front had been a multinational formation, consisting of Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Armenian, Jewish and other Soviet soldiers and officers.
