UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Russia has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council that aims to stem the flow of money to the militant Islamic State (IS) group, a spokesperson of the Russian Mission to the UN said Wednesday.
"A resolution, aimed at cutting off sources of funding to the IS, is being prepared. We hope it will be adopted in the near future," Alexei Zaitsev told RIA Novosti.
The draft resolution has already been presented to the UN Security Council and is expected to be adopted soon, Zaitsev added.
The IS is a radical Sunni group that controls large territories in Iraq and Syria. It is notoriously known for its propaganda via Internet, in particular aimed at attracting funding and foreign fighters. Private donations from supporters in the Gulf states account for a large portion of their funds, according to media reports.
