WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — A shooting at the University of South Carolina that killed at least two people was likely a murder-suicide, the state police posted on its Twitter account on Thursday.

Officials have not released information about the identity of the victims or the circumstances of the shooting.

The campus was temporarily placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon during the shooting. The University of South Carolina said in a subsequent statement that the building where the shooting happened has been secured and that state police are taking the lead in the investigation.
Gun violence has plagued the United States educational institutions over the past several years, with Harvard research showing public shootings taking place on a bi-monthly basis.
