On Thursday US Secretary of State John Kerry said President Barack Obama would soon decide on whether to start sending lethal weapons to Ukraine.
“We’re asking you to fulfill the promises that you made yourselves,” Patriarch Filaret, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church — Kiev Patriarchate, said during a news conference given by a delegation of Ukrainian MPs on Capitol Hill on Thursday.
Apparently alarmed by the recent military setbacks suffered by the Ukrainian army US Administration and Pentagon officials have again been contemplating possible arms supplies to Kiev, with Republican Senator John McCain warning that Congress would otherwise decree such a move in a special act.
A US law enacted in December 2014 allows arms deliveries to Ukraine but, until now, Washington has limited such supplies to non-lethal weapons only.
