Opposition activists allegedly connected with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) threw gasoline bombs at a packed bus and a moving truck in Bangladesh, leaving at least nine people dead and 30 more injured, according to the Associated Press.
The firebombings are the latest in a series of attacks in Bangladesh, which has been hit by a nationwide transportation blockade initiated by the BNP since January 6, the BBC reports.
A total of 63 people have already died in the attacks, which the government says is the work of opposition activists. The opposition denies the accusations.
According to the Economist, Bangladesh suffers a dysfunctional two-party system in which the parties wage mutual vendettas at the country’s expense. The government claims to be combating acts of vandalism and terrorism perpetrated by the BNP. Meanwhile, the opposition accuses the government of trying to create a one-party state.
