MOSCOW, (Sputnik) Political solution to the conflict in Ukraine is "imperative" and further escalation cannot be allowed, UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Saturday at the Munich Security Conference.

"It is clear that the escalation in fighting in the east of Ukraine cannot be allowed to continue and a political solution is imperative," Hammond was quoted as saying on the UK government's website.

The foreign secretary said that London would keep working on diplomatic efforts to resolve existing issues surrounding the Ukrainian crisis.

"There are a number of diplomatic tracks underway with the united goal of finding a diplomatic solution which we will continue to discuss with international colleagues," Hammond said.

The situation in Ukraine escalated into an armed conflict in April 2014, when Kiev forces launched an operation against the independence supporters of the country's southeastern regions.

Attempts to find a peaceful solution to the hostilities have been made several times, with the September Contact Group meeting in Minsk resulting in a ceasefire agreement that, however, failed to contain violence, as it surged in the beginning of 2015.
