MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Britain is not planning to supply weapons to Ukraine at the moment and prefers a peaceful solution to the crisis, UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Saturday on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
"We are not considering supplying arms to the Ukrainians in the present circumstances," Hammond said in an interview to the ITV channel.
The UK foreign policy chief was speaking as EU leaders met in Munich on Saturday to discuss ways of how to bring peace to crisis-hit Ukraine.
Hammond chimed in with a refusal hours after Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel ruled out sending arms to Ukraine. France and Finland did the same earlier, urging a diplomatic settlement.
This came after Washington said it was considering whether to supply lethal aid to Kiev, raising European fears about further escalation in eastern Ukraine.
