Israeli Labor Party leader said that a two-state solution is the only viable alternative for Israelis and Palestinians.

MUNICH (Sputnik) — A two-state solution is the only viable alternative for Israelis and Palestinians, Israeli Labor Party leader Isaac Herzog said Saturday in Munich.

"I am a firm believer in the two-state solution. However difficult the road may be, in my view this is the only viable alternative for both Israelis and Palestinians. Therefore I am committed to trying again to revive the political process between Israel and Palestinians," said Herzog, who is set to challenge incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel's upcoming elections.

War, Peace and a Two-State Solution: UK View on Israel and Palestine
Palestinians seek the creation of an independent state on the territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, partially occupied by Israel, as well as on the Gaza Strip territory.

While voicing support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Netanyahu has in recent months continued enabling settlements on occupied Palestinian land.

Israeli settlements, repeatedly condemned by the UN General Assembly, have been deemed by the Palestinians as a major obstacle to the peace process.

The State of Palestine is currently recognized by 135 of the United Nations’ 193 member states. However, a Palestinian resolution demanding an end to Israeli occupation was rejected by the UN Security Council on December 30, 2014. Eight nations, including Russia, voted in favor of the document, while the United States and Australia voted against it and five countries abstained.
