The authorities in southern Guatemala have put the area on heightened alert after the Fire Volcano there began to spew rock and ash, local media reports said.
No evacuations have been made so far, but the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction agency urged locals to take shelter and be aware of evacuation routes.
Located on the border of the Guatemalan states of Escuintla, Sacatepequez and Chimaltenango, the Fire Volcano has a height of about 3,700 meters, or more than 12,000 feet above sea level.
