UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – After Mozambique's main opposition party Renamo (Mozambican National Resistance) ended its boycott of parliament, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the news and reiterated the United Nations' offer of support to the country.
"The Secretary-General welcomes the news of the meetings between President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama held in Maputo on 7 and 9 February. He takes note of the progress made in the talks and congratulates both leaders for their commitment to dialogue," the United Nations said in a statement published on its website on Monday.
"The Secretary-General reiterates the commitment of the United Nations to support Mozambique as it endeavors to promote development, strong democratic institutions as well as sustainable peace and stability," the UN statement said.
Renamo's boycott of parliament was in force starting from January 13th, when Mozambique's new legislature was sworn in. Dhlakama promised he would end the parliament boycott after the February 7-9 talks with Nyusi.
Dhlakama has been threatening to establish an autonomous republic in northern and central Mozambique after rejecting the results of the country's October elections.
