Moscow police have detained a man suspected of producing and selling marijuana in order to pay off his mortgage, according to a Federal Drug Control Service press spokesman on Tuesday, February 10.

The alleged drug dealer was intending to spend his criminal income to pay off his mortgage.

According to the police statement, the arrested man was a 32-year-old Muscovite who worked in a large automobile company. The man grew hemp for personal consumption and also for sale in a rented flat, where he lived with his wife and a child.

The businessman said his monthly salary came to more than 150 thousand rubles ($2,200 US), however, because of the mortgage credit he was seriously in need of additional money.

If found guilty, the man could be sentenced to between 10-20 years under Russian law, said the representative of Federal Drug Control Service.
