MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Despite the fact Palestinians have missions in a number of European countries this will be their first embassy in Western Europe, Swedish PM's press service told Sputnik.
The Palestinians are opening an embassy in Stockholm Tuesday night. It marks closer ties between the two countries just months after Sweden became the first western EU country to recognise Palestine as a state.
The opening will be followed later by an inauguration ceremony and a press-conference with the Swedish president.
The information has also been confirmed by the Palestinian embassy in Russia.
"Palestinians have had a mission in Stockholm for quite a while, but today during Abbas's official visit to Sweden a decision was made to open the embassy. This is very important to us and we hope this trend to recognize Palestine as a state continues in Europe and that other countries within the EU will also recognize us. Sweden made a huge step in that direction," Palestinian ambassador in Russia, Fayed Mustafa, told Sputnik.
