MOSCOW (Sputnik) — At least 200 migrants are missing after their boats sank in the Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday, BBC reported citing UN refugee agency.
“We believe 203 more deaths will be confirmed today, plus as many as 107 more from a report we have received of a 4th vessel’s sinking. We know that through Monday there were 115 migrants killed on the Mediterranean this year, we may by the end of the day have tripled that number," the spokesman for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Joel Millman said.
Each year, thousands of illegal migrants, mainly from Africa, try to cross the Mediterranean Sea in an attempt to reach the European coasts. Their boats are often overcrowded. As a result, over 2,900 migrants died in the Mediterranean in 2014, according to the IOM.
