Eight police officers, including a police captain, and a civilian were wounded in the Ain Shams district after an improvised bomb targeting a police patrol was detonated by suspected Islamist militants, Egypt’s Interior Ministry said.
Police are now inspecting the area for other possible explosives. The injured people were taken to a local hospital.
Skirmishes and bombings became commonplace in Cairo and other Egypt’s cities since the 2013 removal of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.
The Egyptian affiliate of the Islamic State carried out coordinated attacks last month resulting in more than 30 people killed in the Sinai Peninsula. Hundreds of soldiers, police officers were killed during armed attacks in the border Sinai region as well.
