A member of the Afghan government’s peace council for dialogue with the Taliban was killed by a gunmen in the southern city of Kandahar, an official said Friday.
According to officials, Sheirin Agha was murdered while praying at a mosque late on Thursday night in the city of Kandahar.
Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani denounced the attack in a statement. No one claimed responsibility for the outrage.
In the past the Taliban have assaulted members of the High Peace Council, a government-appointed group founded by former President Hamid Karzai to negotiate with the militants.
Taliban militants have continued their attacks on Afghan security forces in recent months.
