Healthcare Review Urges NHS to Appoint Whistleblower Guardians
MOSCOW (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — In the United Kingdom, ethnic minority staff working in healthcare is harassed and bullied three times more often than their white counterparts and their complaints are frequently ignored, the executive director of the British International Doctors Association (BIDA) told Sputnik news agency Friday.

“Sadly BME [Black and Minority Ethnic] staff are three times more likely to be bullied and harassed and they are more unhappy and when they raise concern about anyone, they are ignored and if it is a white colleague and those in leadership positions then they are more often disciplined and punished,” Umesh Prabhu told Sputnik.

Britain’s NHS Reportedly Hunts Whistleblowers
On Wednesday, Sir Robert Francis released a 223-page review of reporting culture in UK public healthcare, which uncovered that medical staff were bullied, persecuted, forced out of their jobs and in some instances driven to suicide after they lifted the lid on poor patient care. The chief investigator urged the appointment of guardians at every National Health Service (NHS) trust to back whistleblowers.

Umesh Prabhu underlined that protection of whistleblowers in British healthcare will benefit both the medical staff and patients.

“I fully support it and anyone who raises concerns must be supported and there must be good leaders who act on their concerns,” Prabhu said, adding that protection of staff and patients should go hand in hand.

He noted that going by his own experiences, when the concerns of the staff are addressed properly “patients are safer and staff are happy.”

NHS Money Spent On Spin, Not Doctors
The review of nationwide healthcare system was launched last June after continuing disquiet about the way NHS organizations dealt with concerns raised by NHS staff and the treatment of some of those who dared speak out.

The NHS is the UK’s publicly funded health care system. It comprises NHS England, Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland, NHS Scotland and NHS Wales. Its largest unit, NHS England, has almost 1.3 million employees.
